Brief biography

Susanna Burghartz has been a professor of history at the University of Basel since 2015.
She studied history, philosophy and economics at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Bonn and Basel, and obtained her PhD from the University of Basel in 1988, where she also completed her habilitation in 1997. She has taught at the universities of Basel, Bern, Lucerne and Bielefeld, and held a Swiss National Science Foundation professorship from 2000. Four years later, she was awarded a professorship at the University of Basel.
She was a Beaufort Visiting Scholar at St. John’s College, Cambridge, and since 2017 has held a joint professorship at the History Department and the Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel.

Between 2012 and 2020, she was a member of the Research Council at the Swiss National Science Foundation (Division IV).

Susanna Burghartz has been a member of the Swiss Science Council since 2020.
 
She was born in Essen on 16 May 1956, is married and the mother of four children.
